Artist Bio

Rebecca Madura is a New Orleans-based artist working in oil, with a focus on large-scale still-lifes, florals, abstractions, and recently, the addition of plein-air painting. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Fine Art and French, she also holds a master’s from Tulane University and a post-graduate certificate in non-profit management. After over 30 years as an art educator, including at the New Orleans Museum of Art, she now devotes herself to her studio practice. Rebecca teaches at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art and serves as a Talented Visual Arts evaluator. She is President of the Board at Green Light New Orleans and has contributed public art to several initiatives. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, including Tulane University A.B. Freeman School of Business, Provenance Hotels, and in several campuses of the Ochsner Health System.

Artistic Process

Working exclusively in oils, my practice navigates the space between abstraction and representation, using each mode allows my ongoing exploration of formal concepts, the creation of visual hierarchies, and the emotional impact of color. While abstract compositions dominate my work, representational pieces remain an integral part of my process, allowing for a dynamic exchange between subject-driven content and painterly intention. Nature has always been a source of inspiration, particularly the tension between human detachment and connection to the natural world. Working in series allows me to have a deeper exploration of themes, conceptual growth, and reflection through the painting process. I aim to evoke personal experience through form and color to create a visual dialogue that invites the viewer into a shared yet open-ended journey.
